The Stars and Stripes - During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key seeing the American flag over Fort McHenry on Sept 12th 1814, wrote "The Star Spangled Banner."
Inspired by Betsy Ross, on June 14th 1777 the Continental Congress approved the OLD GLORY and detailed the composition.
The flag has changed 26 times since the 13 State Union adopted it. The 48 star version for the 48 States was unchanged for 47 years, until Hawaii and Alaska were joined into the UNION.

President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress in 1949. The National Flag Day Foundation observes Flag Day on the second Sunday in June.
Oddly enough, Flag Day is not an Official Federal Holiday! (June 14 1937, Pennsylvania became the first and only State to celebrate Flag Day as a State Holiday) The Official United States Code – It’s at the President's discretion to proclaim officially the observance every year AND of course, he always does during a Ceremony!
